Corcovado National Park
Description
Location: Corcovado National Park is located on the Osa Peninsula, northeast of the Golfo Dulce, Puntarenas province at 368 kilometers southeast of San Jose in the Pacific Ocean. The perimeter of the park is protected by the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, Guaimí Indian Reservation, and the Pacific Ocean, serving as buffer zones for the Park, this feature provides added security to the area, and is not directly exposed to human activity.
In regard to forest in Corcovado can be found 16 plant associations such as; intertidal zone, mangroves, lagoons, swamps arable yolillales (Raphia taedigera), riparian and gallery forest, lowland forest on sedimentary poorly drained high forest on well-drained alluvial soils, high rolling plateau forest, high forest low rugged mountain, high mountain forest floor ravine high forest down steep mountain cloud forest. Since much to these plant associations, is that Corcovado has a variety of plants and animals. Corcovado’s forests are of great height, their roots are very large, generally have vines and bejucos.El sector has more undisturbed by man, which leads to the existence of many species that need the tranquility of the forest to survive. It is estimated that in Corcovado and the Osa Peninsula there are 375 species of birds, of those, 18 are endemic, 124 mammals, including over 50 are bats, 40 species of freshwater fish, 8000 of insects, 71 reptiles and 46 of amphibians.
Of mammals that are endangered the park hosts 11 of them, serve as an example the tapir (Tapirus bairdii), the squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii), jaguar (Pantera onca) and the giant
Natural Resources
The 42 560. 434 ha., Tropical rain forest which measures the Corcovado National Park, are small to biodiversity that it exists, given that the area can be found from common species, endangered species (such as the tapir, the jaguar, chestnut, agouti), extinct in other areas (the largest population of scarlet macaws (Ara macao) is located in Corcovado) to endemic species.
