Part of Puntarenas province and just northeast of the Corcovado National Park, Isla del Cano is an island of considerable geographical and archeological importance. Fifteen kilometers from the Port of San Pedrillo, this 300-hectare piece of land was formerly a cemetery or burial ground dating back to the pre-Columbian era.

In terms of plant species on the island are:
158 species of vascular plants and ferns. The area is characterized by tropical rainforest, and most species are perennials (Arguedas 1999).
The dominant coral species is:
Porites lobata, which is resistant to environmental fluctuations, has a high rate of recovery from injury and the subject of a low level of predation (Gomez and Cortes 1989). The corals are colonies of tiny animals that can take hundreds of years to form structures visible today.
